About the work“Why should I paint dead fish, onions and beer glasses? Girls are so much prettier,” said Marie Laurencin about her work. The French artist used dancers as a recurring motif in her pieces. What is unusual about this lithograph is the composition: it appears like a detail from a larger scene. The dancer seems to leap out of the picture. Düsseldorf art dealer Alfred Flechtheim published this print at a time when Laurencin was married to the painter Otto von Wätjen, who was from Düsseldorf.
