About the workThis woodcut self-portrait was published in an edition of 50 copies by Verlag Karl Lang in 1914. Hans Lühdorf acquired this work from Galerie Vömel in Düsseldorf between 1939 and 1945. During the era of National Socialism, the young lawyer established a collection of prints whose character was at odds with the officially endorsed style of art that was devoted to the idealisation of nature. What ignited Lühdorf’s passion for collecting was, of all things, a travelling exhibition of “degenerate” art that had been organised by the authorities in 1937 to deter the public.
