Status
on display, room 014This low wooden door originally belonged to a traditional mudbrick building on the Arabian Peninsula. The entrance, ornamented with carvings and colourful, geometric motifs, was part of the otherwise rather unadorned exterior façade testified to the wealth of its inhabitants. This architecture in the so-called "Najdi" style, named after the highlands in the interior of Saudi Arabia, had its heyday between the 13th and 18th centuries. The design's special feature, apart from the decor, was its construction adapted to the desert climate with thick walls, shade roofing, few windows and small entrances.
