About the workThe concert hall in the Kunstpalast, inaugurated in 2001, is named after one of the most important German composers: Robert Schumann (1810-1856). In September 1850, Schumann was appointed music director of the city of Düsseldorf. He subsequently composed his well-known "Rhenish Symphony", in addition to many other new works. After an argument at an orchestra rehearsal, Schumann terminated his contract in October 1854. The composer – physically and mentally scarred – had already once admitted himself to a psychiatric institution in Endenich near Bonn. He died there two years later.
