Cain and Abel Are Fighting Again, 2020

Status
on display, room 020 About the workThe artist Sophia Süßmilch, originally from Bavaria, explores male-dominated power structures in her work. In this piece, she draws on a well-known biblical motif: the title refers to the first murder in the Bible. Cain killed his brother Abel out of jealousy after God accepted Abel’s offering but rejected his. Stories like this, shaped by rivalry and violence, still resonate in societal and political events today. Süßmilch’s simple, almost naïve style of depiction stands in stark contrast to the gravity of the subject matter.
