About the workEugenie Bandell’s painting style was described by an art critic in 1904 as "free and powerful in application, but with an obtrusive colourfulness". The Frankfurt painter strung broad brushstrokes together like a mosaic. She used this technique, inspired by her teacher Wilhelm Trübner, not only for portraits, but also for her still lifes and landscape paintings. She wrote the title of the work on the back herself. Prostitutes were referred to as cocotte. The sitter carries a necklace in her hand instead of wearing it around her neck, making her upper body appear all the more exposed.
