The Metamorphic Philosopher, 2013
MediumAcrylic and paper on canvas
(H x W) (Jeweils)80 × 70 cm
About the workPortraits of great philosophers in stone or marble are an artistic expression of recognition. In this three-part painting, they appear to be undergoing a “metamorphosis”. Presented on pedestals like objects in a museum, they come to life as so-called “Hennlings” – an allusion to the artist himself. Using their senses of touch, hearing and sight, they explore the images in the background. These show sexual depictions reminiscent of film scenes. Henning’s work thus combines the media of painting, sculpture and film with which he works as an artist.
