About the workMarianne von Werefkin was a co-founder of the New Artists’ Association Munich in 1908/09, an important predecessor of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider). This painting was created somewhat later while visiting her brother in what is now Trakai National Park in Lithuania. The artist lent the winter landscape a mysterious atmosphere through the moonlight and stark shadows. The painting is characterised by the play of contrasts: although it is night, it seems to be light, and Werefkin placed areas with warm red tones next to the cold blue of the snow.
