Place of originBerlin
About the workDaniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki was a quick and skilled draughtsman. The artist, who worked in Berlin, often portrayed his family members. Many of the studies made in his domestic environment served as models for his printed works. This drawing shows his nine-year-old son Wilhelm. The portrait was made with red chalk, which could be used to draw a fine line as well as to cover a large surface. These properties made red chalk a popular drawing medium for sketches and studies.
