About the workStylish, simple and affordable: with these qualities, Josef Hartwig’s chess set fulfilled key Bauhaus requirements. The chess pieces are reduced to geometric shapes – crosses, squares, circles – and their design indicates the possible directions of play. A stone and wood sculptor, Hartwig worked as a master craftsman at the Bauhaus in Weimar from 1921 to 1925. During the National Socialist era, he was a member of the Nazi Party and taught sculpture at the Frankfurt School of Art until 1945.
