About the workLarger than life, Markus Vater depicts this cat: with a panicked look, frozen in fright and with no prospect of a way out of the situation. The artist, who lives in Düsseldorf and London, uses the animal as a symbol of a deep inner fear – it appears overwhelming in comparison to the city in the background, which with its hectic pace, stress and noise is often the cause of social anxiety. However, the exaggeration also gives the picture a comic quality. Subliminal humor and the examination of the emotions of everyday life are common to many of the artist’s works.
