About the workLotte Laserstein portrayed her grandmother Ida Birnbaum in an intimate moment on her deathbed. The Berlin artist kept this picture with her throughout her life as a memento. When she later signed and dated the work in her old age, she added the wrong year by mistake. In finely graduated shades of brown, the old woman’s head and hands stand out against the sketchily outlined nightgown and white sheets. This painting was created shortly before a turning point in Laserstein’s artistic career, which had taken off rapidly in the 1920s. This ascent was brought to a halt when the National Socialists came to power and when in 1937 the Jewish artist had to emigrate to Sweden.
