Two Figures in Brown, ca. 1928
Oil on canvas
(H x W)40,6 × 24,8 cm
About the workTwo figures, whose simplified forms are reminiscent of dolls, harmoniously blend into a space composed of vertical lines and brown tones. Oskar Schlemmer attached great importance to proportional balance in his compositions. The relationship between humans and space was always at the heart of his work. The people in his pictures have no individual distinguishing features and thus represent a collective community. Schlemmer taught mural painting, wood and stone sculpture and stagecraft at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau in the 1920s.
