About the workDrawing from memory, the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner carved the portrait of Ludwig Schames (1852–1922) in front of the nude figure of a woman into wood. He had last met his Frankfurt art dealer in person two years earlier. While staying at a Swiss sanatorium, Kirchner did not have access to a printing press and thus ground the print block by hand. This resulted in the contrast between the areas and the lines in the face, hair and beard, which appear as if painted. The elongated depiction of Kirchner’s patron arose from the use of the reverse side of an irregularly curved print block.
