About the workAmalie Bensinger studied painting in Düsseldorf in the 1830s. As a woman, she was not permitted to attend the art academy and had to take private lessons. The painting here is a copy of a work by Wilhelm Kaulbach, who in 1840 created a study for a portrait of fellow artist Heinrich Heinlein. The Hamburger Kunsthalle acquired it in the 1950s. It is unknown where Bensinger saw Kaulbach’s work, but she might have known him personally as they had both grown up in Mannheim. The copy remained in Bensinger's possession for the rest of her life.
