About the workThe German shoe manufacturer Birkenstock first developed its signature ergonomic footbed back in the 1920s. Still available today, its design made the company famous throughout Europe. The first Birkenstock sandal was presented as a “health shoe” at a shoe trade fair in Düsseldorf in 1963, which was held in the Kunstpalast. The “Madrid” has remained virtually unchanged and is now one of the most popular and successful classic Birkenstock models in the world.
