not on displayIn 1961, Deutsche Post introduced a technically and visually innovative telephone with the “Fernsprechtischapparat FeTAp 611”, which was also known as the “grey mouse” because of its colour. Compared to its predecessors, whose design dated back to the 1930s, this model was more compact and easier to handle, while the use of plastic made it lighter and more durable. In the Federal Republic of Germany, this device marked the transformation of the telephone from a luxury object to a commodity that was taken for granted – for many West Germans, it was the first telephone “of their own” at home.
