on display, room 030 About the workA coarse fabric covers the canvas like a second skin. Precise incisions create a dynamic pattern that reveals the bright purple background underneath. Using simple methods, such as the contrast between colour and materiality, the artist designed a rhythmic structure with a surface that seems to be in motion. This picture marks a turning point in Hal Busse’s oeuvre towards increased abstraction. Otto Piene invited the German artist, who studied painting in Stuttgart, to exhibit with him and the other ZERO artists in 1958.
