The East German photographer Evelyn Richter captured everyday life in the GDR in all its contradictions. She always had her camera with her to capture incidental moments of both conformity and resistance. At the centre of her extensive photographic work is the human being, whom she always treated with great empathy. As a long-time teacher at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Richter influenced an entire generation of photographers.
