not on displayA hairstyle can be a political statement – in their juxtaposition, Rebecca Racine Ramershoven's photographs reflect questions of Black identity in all their complexity. Ramershoven gets close to her subject: playful details such as the sparkling pearl hair clips tell a dazzling story of Black pride. The close-up shots, which convey intimacy and proximity, illuminate aspects of the representation and self-empowerment of the Black community. In Ramershoven's artistic exploration of her own family history, the personal and private enter into an exchange with the universal experiences of people of colour in a white majority society.
