About the work
At the end of the nineteenth century, the French artist Émile Gallé was one of the world’s most famous glass and furniture designers. He drew inspiration for his varied creations from nature as well as Japanese ink drawings and ornaments. For these nesting tables, Gallé used different coloured woods for the inlays, which featured floral motifs, including columbines and lilies. Gallé took over his father’s business in Nancy in 1874 and opened further studios and sales outlets in Paris, Frankfurt am Main and London throughout the 1880s.
