About the workThe museum acquired this woodcut by Eberhard Viegener from Adolf Uzarski, one of his fellow artists, in 1947. The two probably knew each other through the Düsseldorf-based gallery owner Alfred Flechtheim, who had published a portfolio of Viegener's woodcuts in 1918/19. Flechtheim maintained close contacts with the artists' association Das Junge Rheinland, founded in 1919, to which Uzarski belonged. This piece is a rare self-portrait of the artist. Viegener came from Soest, where he completed an apprenticeship in his father's painting business from 1904 to 1907.
