About the workConical headgear has been widespread in many European cultures since the Middle Ages because it is so simple to make. For centuries, the traditional cap for Albanian men has been fashioned out of a piece of felt made from undyed wool. The hemispherical shape is typical of northern Albania. In contrast to everyday clothing, which used less expensive materials, an embroidered velvet cap such as this one was part of the finery worn by townspeople and well-heeled country folk on holidays and special occasions in the nineteenth century.
