About the workThere is no feminine form of the word "pharaoh" in the Egyptian language. Accordingly, the Egyptian ruler Hatshepsut appears as an androgynous character in many historical depictions. Donja Nasseri takes the figure as a starting point to explore questions of gender identity that can be transferred to the present day. Using digital and analogue collage techniques, the artist places Hatshepsut in changing environments, takes the figure apart, reassembles it and in this way exposes the constructed nature of notions of masculinity and femininity.
