About the workIn her work, Talisa Lallai explores images of the exotic in the minds and everyday lives of Western Europeans. She combines analogue photographs with found material such as postcards, and occasionally objects such as books – adventure novels, for example. In playing with clichés, it becomes clear that they are a means of keeping people, regions and contexts distant and foreign, but that they can also function as a shorthand for different identities. Lallai’s oeuvre challenges us to examine the self, which is what gives rise to the construction of an opposite “other” in the first place.
