on display, room 012Embroidered leaves and blossoms of the Asian bluebell tree and characters in gold-coloured and red silk, which signify happiness, prosperity and a long life, adorn this Japanese cosode. The simple cut of the garment has its origins in the 12th century and differs from the kimono in its proportions and design of the sleeves. The name cosode translates as "small sleeves. This cosode probably belonged to a lady of high society, as indicated by the floral motif, which was common in aristocratic circles as part of the coat of arms.
