About the workAn armed king? A devil on a throne? The three faces, the devilish teeth dripping with blood and the snakes darting out of the mouths on either side suggest an aggressive character. But on closer inspection, the figure turns out to be a tattered rag doll; the wool stuffing oozes out of bursting seams in several places. Because of his socially critical and political works, the Munich painter Josef Scharl faced severe hostility from the National Socialist regime, forcing him to flee into exile in the USA in 1938.
