Around the same time, her gallerist Fritz Gurlitt commissioned her to illustrate Pierre Louÿs’ collection of poems “The Songs of Bilitis” from 1894. Mammen moved the narrative – which is about lesbian love in the ancient world – to contemporary Berlin.
