About the workThe abbreviation “M. C.” stands for the engraver Maria Catharina Prestel. Together with her husband and former teacher Johann Gottlieb Prestel, she opened a workshop in Nuremberg that specialised in the reproduction of drawings. This print is a copy of a work from the collection of the Nuremberg merchant Paulus Praun, which was famous in the eighteenth century. After the Prestels’ separation, Maria Catharina went to London, where she worked successfully as a reproduction engraver for various publishers.
