About the workWilhelm Leibl was a passionate hunter. His last monumental painting, “Die Wildschützen” (The Hunters), created between 1882 and 1886, takes up a subject into which he put his “heart and soul”, as he reported to his sister at the end of 1882. He changed his painting style for this work: instead of old-fashioned fine art painting, he strove to depict an event in excited brushstrokes. His numerous, almost life-size preparatory drawings are also rendered with swift, lively strokes. Working with live models in a confined space led to shifts in proportions that seem modern today but were perceived as flaws at the time of their creation.
