About the workIn the nineteenth century, Japanese peasants wore clothes made of cotton rather than silk. Cotton was a valuable raw material whose reutilisation gave rise to a special form of design: to produce these so-called “boro” textiles (the Japanese word “boro” means “tattered”), scraps of fabric were dyed with indigo and sewn together to make new garments. At the beginning of the twentieth century, this practical form of clothing was frowned upon, because many considered it a visible reminder of Japan’s impoverished past.
