His work is characterised by novel perspectives on people and the environment as well as experiments with light and shadow. Funke thereby broke with traditional forms of photographic representation and believed in photography's ability to fulfil a new social function. He was one of the most influential representatives of Czech avant-garde photography and taught in Bratislava and Prague.
