About the workMonochromaticity is the key element in Yves Klein’s art. He was concerned with the effect that pure colour has on a spiritual level. For two years, the Frenchman painted exclusively with the ultramarine “International Klein Blue” that he had developed. He added gold and later pink to his monochrome concept in 1959. In the Catholic faith, the colour gold stands for God, red for Jesus Christ and blue for the Holy Spirit. Klein appropriated the colourful triad and gave it a new artistic expression.
