About the workInconspicuous in shape and size, the value of this bowl lies in its glass texture. Using a spiked tool, indentations were made in the glass in which air bubbles remain trapped. The layer of glass on top is transparent, but interspersed with small gas bubbles and gold leaf flakes. In his designs for the Venini glassworks, the Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa did not limit himself to the outer shape of the vessels, but utilised the transparency for the design of the glass mass itself. This one is called “sommerso bulicante”: immersed, bubbling.
