About the workThe relief with the depiction of God the Father comes from the finial of a high church altar. In Christian doctrine, the nature of God is defined as the Trinity, consisting of God the Father, his Son Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. God the Father holds an apple in his left hand as a symbol of his all-encompassing power. His right hand is outstretched in a gesture of blessing, originally probably over a cross with the dead Jesus Christ. The dove, as a symbol of the Holy Spirit, appears under the figure of God the Father as a mediator.
