About the workThe crucified Son of God is the central theme of Christian art. Crucifixes above church altars have reminded believers of the Christian hope of salvation and the redemption of humankind through the death of Christ since at least the eleventh century. One of the oldest Christian works in the Kunstpalast, this depiction presents Jesus with open eyes in line with early Christian tradition. He appears as “Christus triumphans” (Christ triumphant), the Son of God who overcomes death and sin.
