About the work This small-scale work is one of Andreas Achenbach‘s earliest landscapes. He probably painted it while he was travelling through Denmark, Sweden and Norway in 1835. Achenbach was 20 years old at the time and had already previously studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. During his lifetime, Achenbach enjoyed great success particularly on account of his paintings with Nordic and maritime motifs. His works sold for top prices in relation to those of his fellow painters. Achenbach’s funeral at Düsseldorf's North Cemetery in 1910 resembled a state funeral.
