About the workThis marketing strategy was a complete success. The sculptor Baccio Brandini, who assumed the name of the noble Bandinelli family, was one of the artists who no longer wanted to be regarded as artisans. The engraving shows him in his workshop in Rome in the company of his pupils. In the caption, such a gathering is described as an “academia” for the first time. The act of drawing together and academic exchange turned practising art into an intellectual activity. The concept was pivotal to the founding of the first art academies in Florence and Rome in the sixteenth century.
