About the workThe Düsseldorf painter Konrad Klapheck made everyday objects worthy of being depicted. Always precisely and objectively rendered, without many details and in front of a neutral background, the items are surrounded by an aura of mystery. Each element is carefully considered. The different colours of the boots and the long, striped laces are particularly striking. Through the title of the picture, the shoes become “comrades” – a word that usually signifies military solidarity. In 1960s Germany, it also alluded to those who had fought in the Second World War.
