About the workAround a third of all paintings by the American colour field painter Ellsworth Kelly are in the achromatic tones of black, white and grey. Two monochrome, rectangular canvases are combined to make a single work. Although the white surface is clearly larger, there is nevertheless a visual balance between this and the contrasting black surface below: both panels have an equal presence thanks to the interplay of colour, form and arrangement. This picture was acquired by the art collector Willi Kemp from Galerie Schmela in Düsseldorf in 1972.
