About the workThe Hanoverian painter Carl Buchheister was one of the pioneers of abstract painting in Germany. With this painting he attempted to grasp the concept of summer in an abstract way. “I thought in summer everything is broad, round, coloured, spherical, compact…”, he wrote in a letter. Consequently, the artist composed his painting with clear forms and bright colours. Buchheister saw in his work a parallel to music and compared this picture to a fugue by the composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
