Self-Porträt with Pipe and Pencil, 1926
Tempera over pencil on packing paper
Sheet dimensions43,5 x 29,3 cm
About the workThe 23-year-old Gottfried Brockmann has confidently put himself in the spotlight. While studying at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, the socially critical artist drew a self-portrait with a pencil in one hand and his ever-present pipe in the other. He gazes intently into the mirror, which, along with the visible construction lines, served as a guide for the drawing. He rendered his pipe, shirt and dark jacket in colour, but sketched his head and hands in pencil. The packing paper is thus deliberately left visible. The drawing is signed and can therefore be considered complete.
