About the workThe Swiss Max Bill designed his works on the basis of artistic and mathematical considerations. In accordance with these, he divided the canvas into equally sized areas of colour, creating a balance between inner structure and outer appearance. The bright red creates a balance in contrast to the achromatic colours. For Bill, who also worked as an architect, sculptor, graphic artist and designer, works of art were “objects for intellectual use”, as he wrote in an exhibition catalogue in 1949. His pictures were intended to appeal to both the mind and the emotions.
