on display, room 010.1 About the workPrince Georg of Prussia, who was raised in Düsseldorf, commissioned the Berlin painter Moritz Röbbecke to copy historical masterpieces over several years. They were created in front of the original works. Because this picture by Italian Renaissance artist Raffael was so popular with copyists, there is said to have been a twelve-year waiting list at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Thanks to his renowned patron, Röbbecke was given preference, but wrote in his memoirs: “One must be in attendance, whether dead, ill or alive, otherwise one’s position in front of this painting is lost forever.”
