About the workDespite the clear grid of circles and squares, it is difficult for the human eye to comprehend what is being depicted. Systematic changes, colour contrasts and gradations make the elements vibrate in an undefined space. Originally from Hungary and then resident in France, Victor Vasarely was intensely focused on the creation of optical effects. To achieve this, the former commercial artist developed a set of standardised geometric shapes in the 1950s. By using the individual elements in different combinations, he was repeatedly able to produce new visual effects.
