on display, room 023 About the workLooking back in 1936, Oskar Schlemmer wrote in his diary that this composition had a "magical, suggestive mood". He also considered the artificiality of the woman to be successful. The painting, which he had presumably been working on since 1923, exemplifies his in-depth investigation of the human form in space: the chair and the white background of the painting are in relation to the linear, abstracted profile of the unknown sitter. Schlemmer was a central figure at the Bauhaus, first in Weimar and from 1925 – the year this work was created – at the newly founded school in Dessau.
