About the workThe background of this picture, perhaps wallpaper, heightens the effect of the colourful blossoms to form an explosion of colour. The work bears witness to Maria Slavona’s involvement with the works of Vincent van Gogh; she even owned one of his paintings for a time. Until the year this still life was painted, she lived in Paris, where she was visited by renowned European artists. In 1906, Slavona and her husband returned to Lübeck, and three years later they moved to Berlin, where she was one of the few women present in the male-dominated art world.
