About the workTapio Wirkkala is considered Finland’s most influential designer. He had been working for Iittala Glassworks since 1946. Ludovico Diaz de Santillana, who took over the management of the Venini glassworks in 1960 and had completed an internship with the architect Alvar Aalto in Helsinki six years earlier, invited Wirkkala to Murano. In 1966 and 1970, among other years, he collaborated with the glassmakers there to create a series of models that were to become the most successful in the company’s history. He was particularly fascinated by “filigrana” glass with its long tradition in Venice.
