About the workThis painting was part of Elector Johann Wilhelm II’s collection in Bensberg Castle near Cologne and passed into the holdings of the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the nineteenth century. The work shows a biblical story frequently depicted at the time of its creation. After the fall of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, which claimed the lives of almost all the young men, Lot’s daughters got their own father drunk on wine and seduced him in order to have children with him.
