About the workJohann Wilhelm Schirmer often made studies in nature, which he then translated into paintings in the studio – as with this motif from the Swiss Alps. At the time, large-format historical and religious subjects were particularly prestigious. Through the monumental format here, Schirmer demonstrated that he wanted to claim equal status for landscape painting. The year after this work was completed, he was appointed the first professor of landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In the years that followed, the academy enjoyed an outstanding international reputation in this field.
